Intense Improvement for Your Facial Skin

IPLYou may stream some show on Netflix that you think is intense. At Dr. Lipton’s we prefer to get intense with your facial skin, as in Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL photofacials help to transform red, blotchy skin into an even, more radiant complexion.

What is an IPL photofacial?

At Dr. Lipton’s our photofacial take 20-30 minutes. During the session, we first apply topical numbing gel to your skin. Then we deliver short pulse of IPL. These penetrate deeply into the skin with a wider wavelength than those delivered by lasers. This IPL energy causes collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis to constrict, reducing redness and age lines. After the session, your skin improves over the following weeks.

Who is a good candidate for an IPL photofacial?

If you have blotchy, sun-damaged, or discolored skin, or if you have large pores, freckles, and fine wrinkles, an IPL photofacial could be a good procedure for you. The best candidates have white, untanned skin with good elasticity. By having light untanned skin, the light energy can easily target the darker patches and spots.

Patients with tanned or naturally darker skin tones can experience changes in skin pigmentation after an IPL photofacial, so it isn’t a good option in those cases. Also, if you’re taking Accutane, you can’t have a photofacial until you’ve been off the drug for at least six months. Pregnant women are not eligible.

Your session

We start your IPL session by giving you protective eyewear and then applying cool gel to the treatment area, to act as both lubricant and to keep your skin cool. The IPL handpiece then delivers short bursts of bright light in a wide wavelength. This makes it so that different degrees of skin discoloration and blotchiness can be covered in one session, rather than having to repeat the procedure at multiple different narrow wavelengths, as with laser procedures.

When the IPL is delivered, you will feel a light snapping, as if a small rubber band is lightly snapped on your skin. Then you will feel a warming sensation across the treatment areas.

Afterwards, your skin will be somewhat red, but this passes within just a few hours for most patients. Otherwise, you can get right back to normal activities.
