What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that removes unwanted hair by using pulsed laser energy. This laser destroys the hair follicle but keeps the surrounding skin unharmed. Because the laser beams used to remove hair target its melanin (pigment), the best candidates have dark hair and light skin.

Hair grows in 3 different stages: active (anagen), transitional (telogen), and resting (catagen). When the hair is in the active (antigen) growth phase the laser will have the most effect on the hair follicle. We use both the Yag 1064 and Alexandrite laser, which allows us to treat any skin tone.

Why Do Patients Opt For Laser Hair Removal?

There are a number of reasons people choose to have laser hair removal. The most common one is that they want to unburden themselves from the chore of grooming on a daily or weekly basis. Because laser hair removal works in a vastly different way than shaving, plucking, and waxing, this method does not cause skin irritation and ingrown hairs that are common in other hair removal techniques. People who are prone to razor burn, ingrown hairs, and breakouts associated with shaving gain the ability to enjoy not only smoother skin but also skin that is healthier overall. In addition to eliminating the need to shave or perform other hair removal treatments on a regular basis, laser hair removal is chosen because it achieves very long-lasting results.

Who Is A Good Candidate For This Procedure?

Most adults who want to enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal are excellent candidates. Historically, laser treatments were primarily suitable for people with lighter skin tones. While it is still ideal for laser hair removal clients to have darker hair, newer devices are much kinder to a wider variety of skin tones. It may also be possible to remove finer, lighter hair with laser hair removal, though it may take more sessions to fully disable target hair follicles. Our priority with laser hair removal services is to achieve great results with minimal effect on the skin. Patients who have or have had skin cancer may not be good candidates for laser hair removal. This treatment may also be contraindicated for people who are prone to keloid (raised) scars, are prone to cold sores, are taking certain medications, or who are pregnant.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser light can permeate the skin to achieve a number of goals. The wavelengths of light used in laser hair removal devices targets the hair follicles. Specifically, the light targets the pigment that gives hair its color. During treatment, beams of light enter hundreds of hair follicles at one time. There, light vaporizes the length of hair in the follicles, then transfers into the walls of the hair follicles as heat. The heat that gets absorbed into the walls of the follicles causes damage that blunts the ability to continue producing new hair.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

The laser hair removal appointment can last from just a few minutes to about an hour. This will depend on the size of the treatment area. As an example, it takes less than two minutes to treat the upper lip. Laser hair removal on the legs can take approximately 30 minutes. When you visit our Dallas area office for laser hair removal, your provider will discuss the area or areas that you want to have treated and how long you can expect each of your sessions to last.

Does Laser Hair Removal Save Money?

It can. Depending on the area that is treated, hair would be removed in some way on a regular basis. Removing hair at home requires supplies such as razors, shaving cream, and aftercare products that soothe irritation. Some people receive other professional hair removal treatments like waxing. This treatment is performed less often than shaving at home but also costs more. Getting laser hair removal eliminates the need to routinely treat unwanted hair. Over time, this can amount to moderate savings. The real payoff from laser hair removal is the satisfaction of smooth, soft skin that doesn’t require shaving and doesn’t feel bumpy and irritated.

Is It Painful?

The laser hair removal process can be uncomfortable. It is usually described as a rubber band snapping against the skin. As the treatment progresses, a general sensation of warmth may develop in the target area. Generally, the intensity of the sensation during laser hair removal is influenced by the natural sensitivity of the skin in the area receiving the treatment. For example, laser hair removal on the legs may be minimally uncomfortable, if at all, compared to treatment on the bikini area. This is because the skin on the legs is thicker than that around the bikini line. To reduce the amount of discomfort you feel during your laser treatments, it is helpful to shave the night before your appointment. Some people also notice that their treatment is more comfortable if they avoid drinking caffeinated beverages before their appointment.

Preparing For Laser Hair Removal

Patients scheduled for laser hair removal should avoid plucking, electrolysis, or wax at least three weeks prior to treatment, should be clean-shaven and if a numbing cream has been prescribed it should be applied one hour prior to treatment and covered with saran wrap. The intended treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight, tanning booths or self-tanners prior to or immediately after treatment.

They will move a handheld device that emits intense laser pulses across the area, focusing on individual hair follicles. There are different methods of laser hair removal, some of which combine laser impulses with radiofrequency. During a complimentary consultation, we will determine the appropriate method for the patient.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

There are a few factors that may contribute to the number of laser hair removal treatments a person may need. These include the amount of contrast there is between skin tone and hair color, the technology used, and also hormones. Laser hair removal also works only on hair follicles that are in the anagen, growth, stage of the hair growth cycle. Hair follicles are usually in different stages of this cycle at different times, so each session is working on a specific set of hair follicles. That said, some people may achieve the anticipated outcome in four to six laser sessions, while others may need five to seven treatments to reach the desired amount of hair reduction. For the results of laser hair removal to be long-lasting, it is necessary to complete the recommended number of treatment sessions.

How Often Can I Get Laser Hair Removal Treatments?

Sessions are normally every 5 to 6 weeks. After 6 to 8 sessions, touch-up/maintenance may be necessary. Sessions are typically scheduled further apart, up to 12 weeks, depending on the patient’s hair growth.
