He was accepted into the Navy Reserve Officer Candidate Program (NROTC), which would lead to excellent professional training, direction and opportunity.
Pre-Plastic Surgery Professional Experience
Dr. Lipton graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry Advanced Professional Training Program in 1975. He went directly on active duty as a Lieutenant in the Navy Dental Corp stationed in San Diego. In addition to extensive experience in general dentistry, the Navy offered exposure to the dental specialties. This is where the shift to a surgical career began, with the exposure to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, its interesting, challenging and fulfilling scope of practice. In 1978, Dr. Lipton detached from active duty in the Navy Dental Corp to accept a residency position in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. During that period, Dr. Lipton also worked in the Anatomy Department teaching students, participating in research and earning a Master of Science Degree in Anatomy. He continued as an active reservist in the Navy Dental Corp, finally resigning his commission in 1981 as a Lieutenant Commander, USNR. He completed his training in 1982 as a board eligible Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
