What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers have revolutionized the approach to improving facial appearance. They add fullness and restore volume to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Unlike BOTOX® which eliminates wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscle, these products work by stimulating collagen production and adding volume to the skin and restore lost volume to areas such as the chin, cheeks, and lips.

Candidates For Dermal Fillers

Individuals who are unhappy with signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines can turn back the clock with a variety of facial fillers. Contact our office for your personal consultation and to learn more about the injectable treatments right for you.

Benefits Of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can correct asymmetry, minimize circles under the eyes, improve acne scars, reverse the appearance of aging, and improve the contours of the skin, giving patients a well-rested, youthful appearance. Almost all visible signs of aging can be improved with the use of fillers.

We offer several different types of facial fillers, each of which has unique properties that allow our specialists to tailor the treatment to meet each patient’s distinct aesthetic needs.

What Are The Different Types Of Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are classified as either “natural” or “synthetic.”

Dr. Lipton uses only natural fillers. These fillers are made primarily with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in humans and many other animals. Its job is to hydrate, plump, and firm the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules.

Synthetic fillers are made from different manufactured materials. These range from poly-L-lactic acid to calcium microspheres.

Juvéderm®

Juvederm is an injectable gel that restores volume to the skin and smooths away facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body that delivers nutrients and hydration to the skin. The results of Juvederm can typically last from 6-12 months. The practice of Stuart Lipton, MD is proud to offer the full product line of Juvederm, including Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Ultra, and Juvederm Ultra Plus.

Juvederm Volbella XC

If you have thin lips or undereye hollowing and are looking for a solution, Juvederm Volbella is for you. Volbella is a filler that is tailored to add volume to the lips, while still looking natural. Additionally, Volbella can add volume to approve the appearance of undereye hollowing. Undereye hollows are depressed, sunken, or hollow areas below the eyes that contribute to a tired-looking appearance.

Juvederm Vollure XC

For moderate to severe folds and wrinkles, Vollure can bring back that elasticity in the face that is lost due to aging. Vollure will smooth out those parentheses lines that form from the corner of the nose down to the mouth.

Juvederm Voluma XC

For natural loss of volume in the cheeks, chin, and midface region. Voluma provides lifting, contouring, and volume while creating shape and definition.

Juvederm Ultra XC

JUVÉDERM Ultra XC is an injectable gel that temporarily adds more fullness and plumps thin lips—whether your lips have thinned over time or you simply want fuller lips.

Juvederm Ultra PLUS XC

For moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the parentheses lines or “smile/laugh lines” around the nose and mouth, also known as nasolabial folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the skin, which gives the appearance of a smoother surface.

Kybella

Treatment area under the chin for submental fullness, also known as “double chin.” Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin.

How Are Dermal Fillers Different Than BOTOX?

Patients often assume BOTOX® and dermal fillers are one and the same, but they actually do their jobs in completely different ways. Dermal fillers fill wrinkles and creases from beneath, simply adding volume and pushing the skin back upward. Dermal fillers are used on what is known as “static” wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that show themselves at all times. Smile lines, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, parentheses lines — these are all static wrinkles. Static wrinkles and areas of volume loss are usually due to sun damage, environmental factors, thinning of the skin with age, and decreasing collagen production.

BOTOX® is a neuromodulator, and it only works on “dynamic” wrinkles. These are wrinkles that form when we make certain expressions, such as frowning or squinting. The muscles involved in these expressions contract and over time create a wrinkle on the surface skin above. These wrinkles form mainly on the upper third of the face, the expressive area of the face. BOTOX® is not injected beneath the wrinkle, but into the muscle beneath it. BOTOX® then blocks the nerve message in that muscle, so the brain never receives the message to contract the muscle. Without the contraction, the wrinkle above the muscle doesn’t form. BOTOX® doesn’t fill wrinkles, and it has no effect on static wrinkles.

What Is A Dermal Filler Injection Session Like?

When you arrive at our beautiful office on Main Street in Lewisville, we first apply a topical numbing cream to the areas you want to be treated with filler injections. We wait 10 to 15 minutes for the numbing effect to fully take hold. Then the filler is injected. Different areas require different depths of injection, but the combination of numbing and lidocaine in the Juvéderm filler formulations keeps you comfortable. That’s it. Your session usually takes about 30 minutes.

How Long Does A Dermal Filler Session Take?

The length of your session depends on the area or areas you are having addressed. You can plan on usually 30 minutes for most sessions. If we’re applying topical numbing cream prior to your injections, you should add another 10-15 minutes for it to take effect.

How Many Dermal Filler Sessions Do I Need?

The natural, hyaluronic-based dermal fillers we use at Dr. Lipton’s are meant as single-session treatments. They effectively erase or dramatically lessen the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and areas of volume loss immediately after being injected. They will provide results for anywhere from 6 months to up to 2 years (for Juvéderm Voluma). At that point, the body will absorb the now-inert hyaluronic acid, and the line or area of volume loss will return. Another injection session will maintain your results.

Is There Downtime After Dermal Filler Injections?

After your session, you can go right back to work or your normal activities. There are no restrictions. You may have some slight redness and slight swelling at the injection sites, but that resolves within a few hours.

Dermal Filler Injection Results

You will notice results immediately after your injections, but most patients see the full effects within about three days. Most facial fillers are temporary, lasting about three or four months. Our specialist will discuss follow-up injections that provide the best results designed specifically for your needs.

Do Dermal Filler Injections Hurt?

For most patients, we apply topical numbing cream 10 minutes before their injections. Juvéderm also has some lidocaine in its formulation. The combination ensures patients have little or no discomfort with their injections.

What Are The Side Effects Of Dermal Fillers?

All of the dermal fillers we use at Dr. Lipton’s practice have been approved for aesthetic use by the FDA. We use fillers made predominantly from hyaluronic acid. Because it occurs in the body, reactions to these fillers are quite rare.

The typical side effects after dermal filler injections are slight redness and swelling at the injection sites. This resolves in a day or so. It is possible for a lump to develop at the injection site, but this can be remedied easily by injecting an enzyme, hyaluronidase. This enzyme neutralizes the hyaluronic acid instantly and breaks down the lump. We can then try the injection a second time.
