What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is the FDA-approved injectable that changed the way we correct the signs of aging. As a cosmetic drug, Botox was approved in 2002. It was the first drug to be approved for the correction of mild to moderate frown lines. The base of this drug, however, the bacterium Clostridium, had been used therapeutically for many years.

Botox is the brand name used by Allergan to describe the wrinkle-reducing treatment we all know and love. When injected into superficial muscles beneath the skin, Botox prevents the reception of nerve stimulation that causes contraction. The muscles are temporarily paralyzed but not to such a degree that facial movements are inhibited. With Botox, you look like you, only younger.

As the most commonly known injectable treatment, Botox is renowned for its safety and efficacy in treating not only frown lines but all dynamic wrinkles. These are the creases the form due to muscle movements. Dynamic wrinkles include frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, and platysmal bands on the neck. In addition to offering Botox, Dr. Lipton is now offering Dysport at his practice in Lewisville, TX.

When Should I Consider A Wrinkle Filler?

If you have visible lines in any of the following locations, you should definitely consider starting BOTOX®.

  • On your forehead (transverse worry lines)
  • Between your eyebrows (Frown lines)
  • Smile lines (crow’s feet)

You don’t have to wait to use BOTOX® to treat wrinkles that are already present, BOTOX® not only treats wrinkles – it prevents them.

  • The minimally invasive procedure does not require anesthetic
  • Minimal downtime if any at all. Most patients are able to immediately resume normal activities.
  • Proven results for dynamic wrinkles. Botox has been used around the world for many years. We know that it works, and we know that it works safely.

  • Retreatments are safe and convenient.
"Dr Lipton and his entire staff is so caring. They truly take time to get to know your desired results and explain the options. They are so responsive to any questions, and the results are amazing. They truly are the absolute best. Love that the surgery center is on site. Dr Lipton calls the night before the surgery, and the day of, he holds your hand as you are getting your anesthesia, and reads your horoscope. I know that sounds like a small detail, but it just shows how much he cares and wants his patients to be comfortable every step of the way. Not to mention he went to Johns Hopkins..... He is absolutely wonderful in every way."

Who Are The Ideal Candidates For Botox?

Many adults are great candidates for Botox. The idea that this treatment is only for older adults wanting to smooth frown lines or lift their brow is long gone. In recent years, Botox has become popular among all age groups. Patients in their twenties get injections to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming prematurely.

Adults in their thirties treat minor frown lines and forehead lines with Botox. Middle-aged individuals may use Botox for similar improvements, as well as a sagging brow. If you are generally healthy, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and understand what Botox can and cannot do, you may be an excellent candidate for this treatment.

Can Botox Be Used On Lips?

A lip lift can be achieved through surgery (permanent) or non-surgical methods involving Botox and/or Dermal Fillers. Botox is capable of enhancing the contour of your upper lip without significantly increasing its volume.

Botox can be used to help correct a gummy smile. When injected strategically into the muscles that elevate the upper lip, Botox can reduce excessive gum exposure and create a more balanced smile. By temporarily weakening these muscles, Botox prevents them from lifting the upper lip too high when smiling, resulting in a more proportionate smile.

What Is A BOTOX Lip Flip?

The BOTOX lip flip is a popular cosmetic procedure that improves the contour and shape of your upper lip. The lip flip works well to relax the muscles around the mouth, which then causes the upper lip to roll forward slightly. The lip flip can make your upper lip look without needing to inject dermal fillers.

During the injection, a small amount of BOTOX Cosmetic will be injected into the orbicularis muscle, which will help it to relax. The effect is subtle, yet your lip contour will appear more voluminous.

How Do BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections Work?

It works because it actually weakens the facial muscles that are causing the wrinkles to show. The weakened muscles relax so that the skin can flatten and smooth out. BOTOX® is available to everyone and allows you to look your freshest and youngest even as aging tries to take that away from you.

BOTOX® Treatment Process

Dr. Lipton uses a very fine needle, to inject BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. Usually receiving the BOTOX® injections requires no anesthetic, but some patients choose to have the area to be injected numbed with ice packs or topical anesthetic cream.

Is Botox Harmful Long-Term?

Multiple studies have been done to better understand the effects of Botox in both the short-term and the long-term. One study which observed twins, one treated with Botox and one not, found that the treated twin showed fewer wrinkles than the other. The wrinkles that the treated twin did have were also subtler than the sibling. This indicates one good reason to possibly continue using Botox for several years. Studies also show that you can stop and start Botox at any time without incurring unique side effects.

This FDA-approved drug is considered a low-risk treatment that can continue to provide satisfying results over time. Some people have noted that they seem to build up a tolerance for Botox after many years. This is more of a frustration than a complication, though, as it affects only the longevity and efficacy of the drug.

How Common Are Complications From Botox?

The vast majority of adults who receive Botox do so without notable complications. These would include serious side effects that require medical attention. The Botox product label lists the possible migration of the drug from the treatment site as a potentially dangerous complication. It occurs very rarely and may relate to an unknown allergy or inexperienced injection techniques. When you work with a trained, licensed, and experienced Botox injector, your risk of serious side effects and complications such as difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing is very low.

Who Should Not Use Botox?

In general, Botox is appropriate for adults over the age of 18. Exceptions include women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a neuromuscular disorder. You should contact your provider if you develop an infection or severe acne flare-up before your appointment. During your consultation, it is important that you discuss all medications and supplements you are currently taking. To reduce the risks of side effects, your provider may instruct you to stop certain products for a short time.

Is Having Botox Painful?

Botox injections are not painful. Dr. Lipton and our trained clinical staff have a great deal of experience administering Botox. The use of a tiny needle and gentle technique work together to prevent discomfort. With each injection, you can expect a minor pinch. Some patients don’t register these sensations at all. If you are concerned about your comfort level during your Botox treatment, please talk to your provider. We may be able to apply an ice pack beforehand to cool and slightly numb the area in which you will receive injections.

How Long Does The Botox Procedure Take?

Botox is popular because it is safe, effective, comfortable, and convenient! You should be in and out of the office in less than an hour even if you’re seeing us for your very first Botox treatment. Our consultation is direct and brief, after which your provider can immediately administer your injections if you’re ready to move forward toward a younger-looking you. The injection portion of the appointment typically lasts only 10 to 15 minutes at the most.

What Is The Recovery From Botox?

Botox is a conservative treatment that has very few side effects. There is no need to take time off work to recover. The most common side effects of treatment include minor swelling and redness at injection sites. Some people develop a slight headache or body aches from Botox injections. This typically lasts 12 to 24 hours and does not inhibit the performance of normal activities.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Cosmetic Injections?

How Long Do BOTOX® Results Last?

Results have been shown to last up to 4 months. Every individual is different, so results will vary. Our specialist will discuss what you can expect and when you should schedule your next appointment.

The cost of Botox varies based on region and provider. Occasionally, skilled providers run specials on injectable treatments, but the average per-unit price is about $12. This is a foundational detail because the number of units one person needs can vary quite a bit from another person.
