Spring into Some Thicker Hair

If you’re a man whose father had issues with balding, you’re probably looking in the drain after every shower wondering if you got the same genes that lead to male pattern hair loss. And it’s easy to think you’re alone. Hardly.

by the age of 35 nearly two thirds of men will have some degree of noticeable hair loss. Move the needle up to age 50 and that number climbs to 85 percent of men showing noticeable hair loss. And it’s not just men; about half of women suffer from hair loss after they turn 50.

Available remedies for hair restoration have ranged from marginal (various salves and drugs) to comical (spray-on hair). But hair restoration has evolved over the past few years, and the actual success at returning dormant hair follicles to growth has improved dramatically.

Dr. Lipton offers the state-of-the-art in hair restoration, the ARTAS Robotic Procedure for transplanting healthy, fully functional hair follicles from the back of the scalp (where they are not prone to the effects of male pattern baldness) to the areas where your hair is thinning. Here’s some more information on why you’re losing your hair and how we can help.

What’s going on?

Each of the roughly five million hairs on the human body is in some stage of its growth cycle. This cycle consists of growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen) phases. On the scalp, there are around 100,000 hair follicles. We lose 100 hairs every day due to follicles that have entered the resting phase and shed their hair. But other follicles return to growth and make up for the loss.

Not so if you have male pattern hair loss, you’re getting older, you’re taking certain medications, or you have health issues. Then you’re having more hair follicles stay in the resting phase for longer periods, hence your thinning hair. And if more of those follicles continue resting and go completely dormant, then they won’t grow hair again.

The ARTAS system

So, the idea is to take the healthy follicles from where you don’t need them and transfer them to where you do. When researching various options for this procedure, known as follicular unit extraction (FUE), Dr. Lipton felt far and away the best option was the ARTAS iX system. Developed by a combination of physicians and researchers, the ARTAS system utilizes state-of-the-art robotic technology and artificial intelligence to improve the FUE process. This improves the success rate of the transplanted follicles dramatically because when done manually by a doctor the process involves endless repetition that takes hours and leads to human error that decreases the number of follicles successfully taking in their new locations.
