Ways to Customize Your Breast Augmentation

woman breast for surgery of breast implantBreast augmentation is one of the most prevalent procedures in the cosmetic surgery world. In fact, it accounts for almost 20% of all cosmetic surgeries, more than any other procedure. But even despite this immense popularity, many people still don’t know that no two breast augmentation surgeries are alike. In actuality, they’re highly customizable.

We at the practice of Dr. Stuart Lipton, MD are experts in all things breast enhancement, including the array of customization options available to patients.

Implant Placement

The first customization option is perhaps the most important: the location of a breast implant. A breast implant may be inserted in-between breast tissue and the pectoral muscle below (this is called subglandular placement), or it may be inserted below the muscle entirely (this is called submuscular placement). Dr. Lipton will consult with you to determine which option is best for you.

Insertion Location

Another customizable option in breast augmentation surgery is the location on the body through which the implant will be inserted. During an augmentation procedure, a surgeon may make an incision into the areola, under the armpits, or in the breast crease (the thin line directly underneath the breasts.

Each option carries different benefits, but the main consideration is where you’d prefer to have the incision scar. Each insertion point allows you to conceal the scar differently, and in some cases, the scar is barely visible.

Implant Type

The final way to customize your breast augmentation that we will discuss is the actual material of the implant. The two major options for breast augmentation are silicone (or gummy) implants and saline implants.

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, which closely resembles the texture and weight of human fat. As a result, silicone implants tend to be the most popular. Saline implants, on the other hand, are filled with sterile saltwater and tend to be a less expensive option.

That said, both implant types are considered highly safe and effective.
