Nose surgery is a popular procedure, and it’s no wonder why. Many patients are unhappy with the size or shape of their nose, and they want to do something about it. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
If you are considering rhinoplasty — whether it be an open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty — you may have some questions about what to expect before and after surgery.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to reshape and refine the nose. The most common reason people get their noses altered is to correct a deviated septum or crooked nose. A deviated septum is when one side of your nose has more airway space than the other, which can lead to breathing problems and infections in your sinuses or throat. A crooked nose is simply when one side of your nose is higher or lower than the other — this can also affect your breathing by not allowing enough air into your nostrils.
A less common reason for getting rhinoplasty is if you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your nose itself and want to change it dramatically (like a celebrity who has had multiple surgeries). This type of surgery is called aesthetic rhinoplasty because it’s done primarily for cosmetic reasons rather than functional ones like breathing problems
What Are The Different Procedures For Nose Surgery?
There are several different types of rhinoplasties available today, including:
Open Rhinoplasty
This type of surgery involves making a cut inside your nostrils to access the nasal passages. Once this incision is made, surgical instruments can be used to reshape your nose cartilage and bone structure.
Closed Rhinoplasty
This procedure does not require any incisions on either side of your nose; rather, small incisions are made inside each nostril so that surgeons can access the nasal cavity through these openings.
In a lot of ways, rhinoplasty can be seen as one of the most complicated—and rewarding—of all facial surgeries. Call Stuart Lipton MD at 972-420-0023 to schedule your consultation!
