If you follow the aesthetic industry at all, you’ve heard about hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body whose job is to hydrate and plump the skin. Unfortunately, it can’t overcome the decrease in collagen (the protein responsible for providing the skin’s support structure) production as we age. That’s why our skin becomes saggy, flattens with volume loss, and develops wrinkles and lines as we turn 50.

What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm, along with Restylane® (which Dr. Lipton also offers), are the most popular dermal fillers worldwide. The FDA first approved both for use in the U.S. in 2006. Both started with just a single filler and have since expanded to target different areas of the face. All the Juvéderm® fillers are hyaluronic acid-based and use the hydrating and plumping characteristics to replace lost volume. When injected, Juvéderm® binds with water molecules in the area to firm the skin, add volume, and fill wrinkles.
What do the different Juvéderm fillers address?
- Juvéderm® XC
Smile lines, parentheses lines, and marionette lines are the targets of the original Juvéderm® product. You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
- Juvéderm® Voluma XC
Dr. Lipton may call it “age-related midface volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm® Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area.
- Juvéderm® Volbella XC
This Juvéderm® option was approved by the FDA in summer 2016. Whereas Ultra XC adds fullness and plumps thin lips, Volbella XC is tailored to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of vertical lip lines.
- Juvéderm® Vollure XC
The newest Juvéderm® filler, approved in March 2017, Vollure® XC sounds like it duplicates the original Juvéderm® XC, which adds volume to nasolabial folds, parentheses lines, and marionette lines. But Vollure® is specifically formulated for moderate to deep creases and wrinkles in these areas. It adds more volume to address these deeper depressions.
