Satisfaction is High with Augmentation

Woman with perfect breasts in black bra on black backgroundDifferent treatments and procedures in the aesthetic universe rise and fall in popularity, but one procedure remains quite popular and much of this can be due to the satisfaction patients express with the procedure afterwards.

Breast augmentation.

A study a few years ago from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) showed some interesting statistics that can explain the enduring popularity of breast augmentation.

Since Dr. Lipton performs many augmentation procedures here in Lewisville, let’s get into the stats in this autumnal blog.

High satisfaction rates

The ASPS study queried 225 women who were interviewed at least one month after their breast augmentation surgeries over a five-year period. The average patient age was 34 years old. The average implant size was 390 ccs.

On a 10-point scale, the women reported an average pain score during recovery of 5.9. On average, they used prescription pain medication for five days and were off work for seven days. Patients felt they were “back to normal” about 25 days after their surgery.

When asked about the psychological aspects of their breast augmentations, 92 percent of women reported improved self-esteem after augmentation. Sixty-four percent reported an improved quality of life.

Before their surgeries, most of the women (86 percent) said they had been “self-conscious about their breasts.” After surgery, only 13 percent were self-conscious about them.

BIA-ALCL

Since COVID made things so crazy for the past 18 months, it’s hard to get a realistic picture of current breast augmentation statistics, but there is expected to be a small decrease in the number of procedures due to “breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma” (BAI-ALCL). You can read about that in detail in this blog.

It’s important to note that the FDA recall and ban was for a single breast implant type, the Allergen Biocell macrotextured implant. It’s thought that the texture on this specific implant causes the reaction in the scar tissue surrounding the implants.
